What are you making today?

Tuesdays and Fridays are the best days to come into Statements. Those are the days when the smell of fresh baked scones and cookies wafts in the air, thanks to the artistry of our hospitality coordinator, Susan Feiker.

Who is Susan Feiker (or SuFi) you may ask? She is the mama of Statements. If it weren’t for her kind smile, comforting spirit, listening ear, amazing baked goods, warm hugs and continuous generosity the Statements crew would not be who they are today.

SuFi came to Statements four years ago wanting a change in her life. She has made Seattle her home for the past 8 years after living in LA off and on for 9 years. It was here in Seattle at Mars Hill Graduate School (no relation to the local church) where she earned her masters of Christian Studies, which she specifies is a mix of psychology and theology studies.

It is probably her degree and her overall caring personality that makes people flock to her kitchen for conversation. “I love people and their hearts. I want people to feel comfortable,” says SuFi about her impromptu counseling sessions that go far beyond the employees and into Statements customers, “…I feel good about it, I love it. I love that they can share their life with me. All are welcome.”

Along with her amazing cooking ability there is a lot you may not know about SuFi. She is an artist who works mainly in the encaustic medium–wax or oil on wood. She also likes to sing, dog sits a cake eating Dalmatian and is also very interested in historic preservation. She is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation which is probably why when asked if you could be anything she said an archeologist “…like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft.”

Ok back to baking. SuFi has not always liked to bake. In fact she tried to avoid it as a child when her Mom wanted her to help but it just caught up with her. Her scones and cookies are one of the reasons Statements is known throughout Seattle. SuFi’s favorite goody to bake is the cinnamon schemer scone, “….I like getting my hands in the flour and cinnamon and people love them.”

Overall, Statements could not survive without SuFi as she is one of the many who make up Statements family feel. Tuesdays and Fridays would just be another day without her.

Statements on Steve

If Statements were a body, Steve Calkins would be the heart. Between his passion for the northwest (he grew up in Portland and has lived his entire adult life in Seattle), and his love for the tile business, we couldn’t ask for a better leader.

He graduated with a bachelors degree in business administration from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, and met Carol, his wife, while there. They will be celebrating 39 years of marriage in June. Steve and Carol became part of the tile/design industry in 1970, when he graduated from college and began working for Uniq Distributing Corporation in Portland. In 1974 when he and Carol were pregnant with their first child, they moved to Seattle and took over Uniq. Uniq carried Japanese 4 ¼” wall tile, a wide-variety of mosaics and 8” floor tile from Italy. Because it was the late 70’s, carpet, sheet vinyl and plastic laminate were the design trends at the time, but Steve, being the mover and shaker that he is, decided to change all that. He attended home shows at the Seattle Center to introduce Italian floor tile and the use of mosaics for kitchen backsplashes and tub recesses. To stay in touch with the trends he added plastic laminate and sheet vinyl to Uniq’s product mix through the 1980’s but always knew he was a tile guy at heart. His love of Italian tile grew after he developed a close friendship with some east coast buyers who were successfully purchasing Italian tile for distribution. In 1978 he took his first trip to Italy to buy tile and subsequently attended the Cersaie show (the world’s largest ceramic tile exhibition) in September of that same year. Since then, attending Cersaie has become an annual event for Steve.

Steve left Uniq for a two year hiatus. The sabbatical gave him time to work on his vision for a new type of tile distribution business with a smaller clientèle and a focus on the design community’s needs. So in October of 1997, he made this vision a reality when he opened Statements Distinctive Tile and Stone in Georgetown. In addition to Steve, there were five employees– two who worked part time. Everyone wore many hats during the early days. Steve handled orders, unloaded containers and purchased materials.

Steve takes great pride in knowing that, over the last eleven years, Statements has never lost sight of their initial vision for the designer.

Steve’s greatest pleasures in life have always been his children, family and friends, including the Statements staff–evidenced by how well he takes care of us.

His community involvement is also very important to him. He has been a nine year board member of the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association, which represents ceramic tile wholesalers with representatives and associate members from factories around the world. Steve is also president of his local church and has been on a number of non-profit boards. He and Carol also support a number of charities both internationally and locally and are currently board members for a low-income senior housing project that will be built in Lynnwood in 2009. Steve also encourages his employees to become involved in the community and will support them financially to do so. With his support, Statements has participated in the Children’s Hospital Cystic Fibrosis stair climb and Habitat for Humanity’s South Puget Sound projects, amongst many others.

Steve made two life changing decisions in 2008. The first change was to delegate a portion of Statements’ leadership to his son, Ryan. Although he has fewer responsibilities, he continues to be our chief ambassador, advisor and security blanket. The second change was to open a concept showroom in Pioneer Square geared towards Seattle’s architecture and design community. Statements Design Studio addresses the needs of architects and designers who are often unable to visit our Georgetown showroom. The space also provides a little more room for offices to accommodate our growing staff. The Georgetown showroom model has been a tremendous success in supporting the residential designer. Steve hopes the studio will do the same for architects and commercial designers.

Steve says his life today is “glorious.” He spends his time in the Pacific Northwest involved with his passions of work, family, friends and travel, but does grumble when the weather turns cold and he knows how warm and sunny it is in Arizona. When he is in Arizona, Steve stays connected to work, family and friends but plays a lot of golf! He has a phone line set up directly from Statements to his home in Arizona. Steve says, “…for me life can’t be any better.” This is obvious when you hear him speak about his life as a grandpa, his days golfing and his excitement when Statements has a great month. Steve is truly an inspiration to us all. He has so much positive energy and is an encouragement to all of us.

What hasn’t this girl done?: Spotlight on Sherry

sherry loves tileAt the young age of 25 Sherry, the showroom’s newest hire, has done more than most people have before the age of 40. She has been in a band since high school and toured the Country for the past four years. In addition, Sherry was a substitute teacher of grades K-12, in all subjects, on and off for 3 years. She spent a month in Kenya and has been teaching herself Swahili, (Kenya’s native tongue), for the past nine months. To top it all off, Sherry earned a degree in public relations from the University of Idaho.

Three months ago, Sherry and her husband moved to Seattle from Idaho Falls where she had lived since she was five. They moved to Seattle for a number of reasons, the first being to be nearer to her husband’s sister. Secondly, Seattle seemed to offer them greater career and music opportunities, and because they both have a passion for music and want to work towards being homeowners, it seemed like the right fit. So far, Sherry loves Seattle and does not see herself moving in the near future.

Although Sherry never anticipated doing interior design outside of her own home, she was intrigued by the Statements job listing and decided to give it a go. She says she really likes working in the showroom and that her co-workers are her favorite thing about working at Statements.

Even though Sherry currently lives way up north she is not letting the long commute or gas prices get her down. She, along with Sarah, ride the Sounder train to work every morning on which she enjoys the extra hour of sleep and a relaxing ride. The train lets her off at the train station in Pioneer Square and she carpools the rest of the way with Britt. Sherry has only lived here a short time but is already getting into the swing of the “green” lifestyle which we Seattle-ites live by.

Sherry has many passions. Much like her husband, she loves music. She was the lead singer in her band, Lystra’s Silence, and has been playing the piano most of her life. She also loves to swim. She also has been doing this most of her life and since joining the YMCA she now swims three days a week. Sherry also really enjoys learning about new cultures and hanging out with people.

Overall Sherry is a great addition to the showroom and her positive attitude and good nature makes working with her a lot of fun.

Sick of the Sun: spotlight on David

david.jpg

Self proclaimed “boring guy”, David, the warehouse’s newest addition, is anything but. Statements warehouse guy by day, student by night and rural mail man on the weekends, David is a man of all trades. He started here at Statements on Monday May 12th to assist us with our warehousing needs. A Santa Barbara transplant, David moved up here about a month ago and has been living with a roommate (he hopes temporarily) on Capitol Hill. He moved from the Golden State because he needed a change of scenery and (gasp!) claimed to be sick of the sun.

In the 4 weeks he has been here David finds the people in the Northwest more genuine, kind and less self absorbed than in California. So far, he really enjoys living in Seattle. As mentioned, David is also a student working towards a degree in communications and business through the University of Phoenix. And, just in case you want to know what he plans on doing after he graduates, don’t ask–he doesn’t know yet. That’s ok, David, you have plenty of time to decide!

In addition to his studies, David is a rural postman in Everett on Saturdays. No he is not disgruntled, no he doesn’t have to wear the uniform, no he doesn’t get to drive the mail truck and no he hasn’t been bitten by a dog (at least not while working for the post office). When David is not working at Statements, studying or delivering the mail, he is running. In California David used to run 40-50 miles per week. He loves to run– it is his way of relieving stress and gives him time to think. In addition to all of his other activities David also enjoys crosswords which will make him a great addition to Statements lunchtime crossword puzzlers: Kimi, Ryan and Rebekka. From what I’ve learned about David, he will be a great addition to the Statements warehouse. Welcome David!

3” inch heels and all

britt.jpg“How do you stand in those things all day?,” is normally the question asked to Britt as she runs through the showroom carrying tile that, according to Kristen, will probably hurt her back. But at 5 feet 4 inches Britt needs all the help she can get in the height department.

Britt joined the Statements showroom on November 6th, 2006. After dabbling in restaurants for 10 years and a couple brief stints in TV newsrooms and at Mario’s clothing store, she ended up here at Statements Distinctive Tile and Stone. Although Britt has no formal design training her mom, Kara, has been an interior designer for 18 years and used to take Britt with her on appointments with clients when she was younger. Design is in her blood. Britt’s natural design sensibilities also stem from her education in art history and fine arts at the University of Portland (not to mention her journalism degree from Seattle University).

What she likes best about her job is the finished product when people bring in pictures and are so happy. She also really enjoys writing the new product stories.

Britt describes her job as “always here, always knows where everybody and everything is, ruler of the Jeffrey Court samples and–as the warehouse guys so lovingly say–the “sample boss.”

Britt grew up in that magical little city east of the mountains, Spokane, where she lived until she left to go to the University of Portland in 1999, but not before getting her AA at Eastern Washington University. She loves Seattle but does not want to live here forever. She would someday like to live in New York or San Francisco. But for now Seattle makes a great place for her to snowboard in the winter and enjoy the sun in the summer.

From fabric to tile

jessica.jpg

About two weeks ago, the 11th of March to be exact, our sample department gained a new member of their flock, Jessica. Aside from a love of tile, she joined Statements to get her weekends back and to have more consistent hours. She says the thing she likes most about working at Statements is Annette and Paul, and who can blame her?

Jessica grew up in SeaTac and has lived in the Northwest her entire life. Her family owns a cabin outside Cle Elm which they share with another family. Her Dad built the whole cabin from the ground up. Jessica loves living in the Northwest because she loves nature: mountains, the ocean, and trees–especially trees.

Jessica is a girl of many interests. She plays guitar, bass, piano and flute. She also loves fabric and all things glittery and girly. Since she has never really had weekends off she does not really do anything major on the weekends yet but she is looking forward to embracing her new found freedom.
Aside from all of the other fun and interesting things about Jessica she is also a DJ. She DJ’s mainly private events like high school reunions, weddings and senior citizen dances. Her favorite are the senior citizen dances because she gets to play fun music and all the senior citizens dance. Jessica also has a little business on the side where she makes whimsical girly and as she describes it “dorky” accessories. You can find her creations as www.myspace.com/jessiebeanaccessories.

Jessica is really fun to talk to and a great addition to the Statements family.

Giving Back

Tiffany beforeTiffany after

On Friday March 21st Tiffany did something most women would never think of doing, she donated her hair to Wigs For Kids.

Wigs For Kids is a non-profit organization started by Cosmetic Therapist™ Jeffrey Paul, who since 1980 has been serving children suffering from hair loss. When children lose their hair, whether as a result of medical treatments, health conditions, or burn accidents, they don’t just suffer physically. The change in their appearance can drastically hurt their self-image and have a major impact on their self-esteem.Wigs for Kids

Wigs for Kids has provided thousands of children with complimentary, custom-made hairpieces to help them look themselves, so they can enter back into the world without the ridicule and embarrassment associated with hair loss.
Each individually custom designed hair system is $1,500 and takes 60 to 85 hours to produce. The hair prosthesis is custom designed to the child’s request. Every prosthesis is hand-tied and is made completely from human hair to make sure they look just like a child’s own hair. Since the hair is supposed to be the child’s real hair the wig is made so it won’t come off on the baseball field, or the play ground. They child is also able to swim, sleep and shower with it on. It takes 20-30 ponytails to make one hairpiece. A blend of six to eight ounces of hair in varying shades of color is needed to ensure the natural look and feel of the child’s new hairpiece.

Tiffany started growing her hair out three years when she saw a couple articles on people donating their hair to kids with cancer. “I’ve been to India twice and both times I went to ceremonies where people shaved their heads for religious reasons and was blown away by the self sacrifice and lack of vanity they had about it. So I thought initially I should shave my head – but…I’m not going to be that extreme – yet! Maybe some day I will shave my head, but for now I’m just going to give what I’ve got to someone who needs it more than me.” It is people like Tiffany who make wigs for kids possible. She enjoys contributing to a cause bigger than her and understands she can just grow her hair back, unlike children who have lost their hair altogether. Tiffany said, “Its much easier for me to be comfortable in a short hair style than it is for a child going through the biggest battle of their life. Hopefully my locks can make their battle a little easier. I definitely have a soft spot for charity…we all have so much to give, there is no reason not to do anything we can for someone in need.” I think most would agree with Tiffany’s beliefs. Spotlight on Richard Sariraksa

Richard Sariraksa

When, “Richard you have a phone call on 114,” is paged over the intercom here at Statements, most of us think it is for Richard from Status, but actually it is the newest addition to our family, Richard Sariraksa. Richard has joined Statements as our Vice President of Finance. He comes to us from a long line of financial positions with other companies throughout his career.

Richard decided to join the tile industry after he got wind of us through a recruiting manager at Creative Financial Staffing in Seattle in December 2007. Richard has been an accountant since 1989 and worked for 12 years as a controller for Stockpot Soups which is a division of Campbell Soup Company. He also worked with Rainer Color, Video Only, and Legacy as their CFO before he joined Statements.

Richard was born in Thailand and moved to Cambodia when he was four because his father worked for the US Embassy in Bangkok. The family then moved to Thailand after the communist regime collapsed. When he was 17 he moved to Illinois where he was sponsored by one of his father’s friends. Not knowing English and being from a different culture was very hard for Richard especially with his family being half way across the world. He said when he used to walk to the train station from his house people would throw eggs and spit at him, but he overcame the adversity.

Richard spends his free time with his family and working in his yard. He also enjoys investing in real estate and equity markets and paying close attention to the stock market to invest in what seems most profitable. Richard also wants us to know he likes to joke a lot with his friends and family. So as we get to know him better maybe he can squeeze some laughs out of us.

At Statements, Richard is focusing on financial and operational efficiency to improve our bottom line along with realignment of our staff to achieve the best results as a company. I am not completely sure what that means but it seems like a great idea and we are lucky to have Richard on our team.

Coworker Spotlight: Kyle Uskevich

Matia and KyleIn 2003 a young college student from Tacoma who worked at Abbey Carpet got accepted to the University of Washington in their geography department. After picking up tile from Statements for many years he decided he wanted to work here and asked Tony if they were hiring. Tony was hiring part time and that is how Kyle Uskevich came to Statements. “His last name may sound Russian but it starts with U-S,” says Nate about Kyle. It is reasons like Nate and the other guys who work in the warehouse that make Kyle enjoy his job so much. He considers the warehouse physically demanding and enjoys being able to work with fun people in a positive environment. The physical part of his job should be something he likes considering one of his hobbies is weight lifting. He also really enjoys golf and learning. His love of golf could be one of the reasons Kyle enjoys living in the Northwest. Being a native Seattleite, who grew up in West Seattle, Kyle really enjoys the many seasons the Northwest has to offer. He likes that he can snowboard in the winter and enjoy water sports and golf in the summer.

As many may know Kyle is getting married, but as many may not know a date has been set! On August 2nd. Kyle will marry Matia in Ballard. At this point he says it is just stressful and expensive. However stressed Kyle may feel he always has a smile on his face and a kind greeting, even first thing in the morning no matter how tired he is.
